Map:

At a Glance:

  • This ‘wild’ beach offers some of the most beautiful scenery on La Digue, and is less famous than some of the island’s other beaches, so is often empty.
  • The water gets deep very quickly, as there is no protection from the coral reef, so swimming here is dangerous.
  • However, the conditions can be good for surfing.
  • A restaurant and toilets can be found nearby.

Description:

Grand Anse on La Digue is perhaps the most underrated beach on the island. While its waters are too deep and the currents too strong to swim, the beach offers exceptional beauty, gorgeous sand, and enough facilities to allow visitors to enjoy a whole day here if they want to.

As with many beaches in the southern parts of the island, there is no offshore coral reef here, so the beach is not protected from the open ocean. This means that the water can be rather choppy, especially during the south-east trade winds, and the currents here are strong enough to carry you out to sea.

Most visitors to Grand Anse come by bike, although it is also possible to walk here. There is a small car park nearby, but it is rarely used, not least due to the lack of vehicles on La Digue.

At the beach, visitors will be encountered with pristine golden-white sand, gorgeous scenery, and beautiful, clear water, although this is too deep to swim in. Anyone entering the sea should therefore be extremely careful not to venture too far out. The beach is also home to a restaurant and WCs, so visitors can easily spend a whole afternoon there if they like. However, the lack of shade means that the beach is not ideal for families, or at least not for children to play under the sun for extended periods of time.

Grand Anse is probably best-described as a ‘wild’ beach, but still offers gorgeous scenery and a wonderful sandy surface, making it well-worth a visit. It is much less busy than some of La Digue’s other ‘best’ beaches (such as Anse Source d’Argent or Anse Union), but no less beautiful, making it a more peaceful, serene experience for the Seychelles holidaymaker.
